Two Words: Oeuvre & Quisling

Oeuvre is a term used to designate works or creations, such as the combined works of an artist like Vincent van Gogh or Michelangelo.  Oeuvre can also be used to designate a work by a writer, musician, or painter.  The word is French and can best be understood when used in a sentence.  It is pronounced “ur-vruh.”

“Her oeuvre clearly illustrates her artistic brilliance with a paintbrush.”

“The oeuvre of Vincent van Gogh is best known for its emotional quality and intensity of colors.”

“Beethoven’s oeuvre includes chamber music, symphonies, and concertos.”

“From his independent television shows to his later Hollywood blockbusters, the director’s oeuvre, a testament to his versatility with a camera, showcased his artistic talent and journey.”

The noun quisling (pronounced kwiz-lin) designates a traitor or a person who collaborates with enemies.  It is one of those words that can be traced back to a single person: Vidkun Quisling and a single event.  Vidkun Quisling was an army officer who founded Norway’s Fascist Party in 1933.  He actually collaborated with Hitler and encouraged him to invade and occupy Norway.

Germany later invaded Norway in 1940, and Quisling was installed by Hitler as the head of Norway’s puppet government.  His treachery was so bad and obvious that the term “Quisling” became common in England during the war to designate a traitor.  After the end of World War II, he was executed for his actions.

“The President warned our enemies that all quislings would be harshly punished.”

“Vidkun Quisling was the Benedict Arnold of his time.”

“The company’s president was fired for giving away trade secrets to its competitors; he was a quisling in every sense of the word.”

“In modern politics, anyone siding with the opposing party is instantly labeled a quisling.”

Of course, we can combine them in a sentence, but not easily.

“While the musician’s oeuvre was celebrated for its creativity, his reputation was tarnished by allegations of being a quisling during all the political upheaval.”
