Two Words: Peripatetic & Quadragenarian

Peripatetic is an interesting word and can be used as either an adjective or a noun.  When used as an adjective, it might describe a type of work, like military service or consulting.  These are both jobs that require frequent relocation to perform your work.

But peripatetic can also be a noun used to identify someone who travels to perform their job, such as a traveling nurse.

“The peripatetic nature of working as a consultant means you are always relocating to a new city.”

“John was a peripatetic and rarely bought a house where he lived, knowing he would need to move on quickly.”

“The peripatetic professor, ever the true peripatetic, wandered from university to university sharing his knowledge with younger students.”

Most people know that someone in their eighties is an octogenarian.  It seems to come up often in the news and in conversation.  But what is someone in their forties called?  The term is quadragenarian, which makes sense once you see it.  But the term quadragenarian does not come up in conversation.

“My parents and all their friends are quadragenerians, and they drive us crazy talking about the good old days back in the 1980s.”

“When we were quadragenerians, we thought we knew everything about business.”

“The quadragenerians are always going on and on about disco music they loved back in the day.”

These two words seem possible to combine in a sentence without too much effort, so here are a few.

“The peripatetic quadragenerian consulted for Microsoft across three continents, sharing seasoned expertise with all his coworkers.”

“Just like any good quadragenerian, she embraced her peripatetic soul and moved from coast to coast in search of perfect karma.”

“The peripatetic quadragenerian quarterback brought his playbook and passion to every locker room he called home during his career.”
