Two Words: Slurb & Recompense

The word slurb is slang and a portmanteau of slovenly and suburb.  It is used to describe a poorly planned or sleazy suburb.  The possibility of slurbs arising seems likely when we get into housing shortages, leading to housing booms.

“Jack and Judy moved from downtown to the east side slurbs.”

“Karen and her husband looked everywhere for a new house and finally settled in a neighborhood that was nothing more than a slurb.”

“The builder was in a rush to create more housing, but his haste and sloppiness created a whole city of slurbs.”

Recompence (recompense) can be either a verb or a noun, depending on the usage.  It is a verb when it is used to indicate the act of giving or paying someone for a service.  Recompense is a noun when it is used to describe something that was done or given in payment.

“Rob gave Sam some plants in recompense for those he accidentally ran over in the parking lot.”

“Cathy received several cards as recompense for her service to the community.”

“The group came together and bought Susie some flowers as recompense for her losses.”

Putting these two together was not too bad since they had easily adaptable meanings.

“The sleezy developer offered no recompense to the families displaced by the ever expanding slurb.”

“After the slurb swallowed up all the old farmland, residents demanded recompense for the loss of their heritage.”

“He argued that true recompense would require transforming the slurb into a community with dignity and care.”
