Two Words: Banjax & Decadarchy

Banjax, or banjaxed, is a new word to us that means ruined, incapacitated, or broken.  According to Webster’s Dictionary, the origin of the word is unknown, but it first appeared in 1925 in the play Juno and the Paycock by Irish writer Sean O’Casey.

It is in the category of slang for sure and probably is a derivative of “Bang” or “Bollock” used to describe a mess.  The verb form is banjax and the adjective is banjaxed.  The adjective form seems more straightforward to work into sentences and conversation.  This is a word to drop in conversation and watch people scratch their heads.

“Joe banjaxed his knee playing football and will miss at least ten games while it heals.”

“I worked on my PC all weekend and finally decided it was so banjaxed it just was not worth the time.”

“They knew not to let Susie get near the fax machine, knowing she would banjax it if she tried to send anything.”

Red Divider

If you have studied Latin or Greek, then you know that words beginning with “deca” refer to ten.  So, you are halfway to understanding the meaning of decadarchy.  If I said the word oligarchy, you would know I was referring to a rule by the elite or wealthy people.  So, the “archy” at the end of the word refers to rule.

Put them together, and you have a system ruled by ten people.  If you served on a board of directors and it was a group of ten people, it would be a decadarchy.

“The state was governed by a decadarchy of ten magistrates sharing equal power and responsibility.”

“Historians still debate whether the brief experiment in decadarchy led to more efficient decision-making.”

“After the fall of the monarchy, the rebels established a decadarchy to oversee the transition to democracy.”

Red Divider

Combining these two in sentences is not difficult because they share a connection through politics.  Each sentence illustrates how the two words can play off each other.  Decadarchy as a governing structure, and banjax is a force that can disrupt it.

“The state’s attempt at a decadarchy quickly banjaxed the infrastructure, leaving citizens without water or power for days.”

“After the election, the newly formed decadarchy promised reform, but internal squabbles banjaxed any hope of progress.”

“They tried to implement a decadarchy to share leadership, but one rogue member after another banjaxed the entire system to gain power.”
