Two Words: Cementitious & Flummoxed

The word cementitious is associated with what immediately comes to mind: cement.  When we say something is cementitious, we mean it is strong, rigid, or rough.  To catch its meaning, it is best explored through some sentences.

“When building his house, George specified that areas covered in wood should be painted or stained, but the pre-cast cementitious surfaces should be left exposed.”

“We learned over the summer that we had more luck if we rolled paint onto cementitious surfaces.”

“The workmen were right when they said the word cementitious was just a fancy way of saying concrete.”

An unfortunate spectacle for all Americans in recent months has been President Biden’s change in appearance.  If we said he appears flummoxed, this change would accurately describe him.  Flummoxed is a great word to describe someone exhibiting confusion or perplexing behaviors.

“The road consisted of so many twists and turns that even the most experienced drivers became flummoxed when driving through the countryside.”

“Our children become flummoxed when they see recordings of people excited when playing VCR tapes.”

“The defendant was completely flummoxed by all the legal jargon in the courtroom and interrupted the judge repeatedly for clarifications.”

“Sally thought old man Smith was discombobulated, but I thought his confusion was best described as flummoxed.”

Combining cementitious and flummoxed into a single sentence is not difficult because they seem straightforward when they stand alone.  Just a little thought makes it happen.

“Our construction crew was flummoxed by the unexpected mess and challenge of working with the new cementitious materials.”

“Despite the architect’s and contractor’s confidence in the new cementitious compounds, the plasterers were flummoxed by their unusual messiness and long curing process.”

“The engineers were flummoxed by the unexpected weakness of the cementitious mixture used during the bridge construction.”

How we write matters.  Spelling and grammar matter.  These skills shape how clearly and confidently our ideas reach others.  When your message is accurate and well-structured, people focus on it rather than being distracted by mistakes.  Written communication skills build credibility, helping you sound thoughtful, capable, and professional in everyday communication.  We include these two-word comparisons to aid learning as part of our overall project, and we hope everyone learns from and enjoys them.
