Two Words: Esoteric & Yeet

Esoteric refers to something understood by only a small group of people.  Examples include legal proceedings, scientific terms, and Masonic rituals.  Esoteric is most often used to refer to terminology or special knowledge.

Taking the meaning one step further, it can refer to complex concepts or things that are not easily understood.  DNA research might be esoteric because of its scientific nature.  Masonic Rituals might be esoteric because of their secrecy and need for “inside” information.

“Only quantum physicists grasp the esoteric concepts of quarks and the Higgs Boson particles.”

“The relationship between magnetism and electricity is not easily understood; the connections are so esoteric that many fail to grasp the connections.”

“Masonic rituals are so esoteric and steeped in tradition that only thirty-second degree Masons grasp their meanings.”

“Plastering a wall looks easy until you try it and discover the skill is esoteric and passed down through trade guilds.”

The opposite of esoteric is exoteric.  Exoteric means common knowledge, things available to or understood by the public.

Esoteric and Exoteric are Greek in origin and came into general use in the seventeenth century.

“Christianity has both esoteric and exoteric aspects to its faith and practice, and deeper meanings with study.”

Red Divider

Yeet is, at best, slang used to express surprise.  It has been around for about fifteen years and appears frequently on social media.

“I opened the door and shocked her so much that she shouted ‘yeet’ in surprise.”

“Yeet, I cannot wait to play soccer at the park.”

Yeet can also be used to mean throwing something with great force.  But it has no real meaning for someone outside of their teen years.

“Hand me that bottle, and I will show you how to yeet it across the lake.”

“I bet I can yet this ball further than anyone else in the class.”
