Two Words: Islet & Henceforth

An islet is a noun that means tiny island. When referring to islands like the Hawaiian volcanic islands, it might refer to the newest and smallest islands.  In some countries, lighthouses were placed on the shore or tiny islets just off the coast.

The word can also be used in medical terms to refer to a group of cells that perform a function.  An example would be cells in the pancreas that control functions such as insulin production.

“They decided to build the lighthouse on the tiny islet of New Castle so all ships could see it as they sailed past.”

“The tech titan decided to buy the tiny islet of New Money to build his mega-mansion and to live in seclusion.”

“The doctors decided to try an islet transplant with George to see if it would help with his diabetes.”

Henceforth is an adverb and an ancient English word meaning “from this point forward.”  We seem to intuitively know what it means, although it is rarely used in conversational English.

Once inaugurated, the President henceforth becomes the Commander in Chief.  Another less formal example is the assumption of the suffix of M.D. once someone graduates from medical school.  They are henceforth known as John Smith, M.D. or Doctor John Smith, M.D.

“The Doe family funded the new scholarship and will henceforth be named the “Dr. John Doe Medical Scholarship.”

“The bones were discovered in the New Mexico desert by Mark Twain, and the dinosaur will henceforth be known as the Huck-Finnosaurus.”

Of course, these two words can be combined into a single sentence.

“Henceforth, the scientists will focus their research on the small islet in the middle of the bay, hoping to discover a new plant or animal species.”

“The islet leaders decided to prepare for all natural disasters by henceforth building up food and water stores.”
