History becomes clearer when we stop measuring the past by today’s standards. Every generation believes it sees more clearly, yet each is wrong in its own way. Presentism narrows our vision. An ouroboros closes the loop. Together, these two words describe what happens when judgment circles back on itself and the present becomes a trap.
Presentism
The habit of judging the past by the standards of the present is a trap known as presentism. Trying to impose contemporary values on people who never lived under them is a logic trap. Presentism replaces historical fact with modern fiction and can mistake hindsight for wisdom. We see this conflict today in many young people who are influenced to believe that people in the past were evil for not knowing what future values might be.
“His argument slipped into presentism, as if the eighteenth-century surgeon should have anticipated the invention of open-heart surgery.”
“The college’s archive resisted presentism by presenting each document in its original context.”
“The philosopher warned the class that presentism often misrepresents history as irrelevant.”
“In a remarkable display of presentism, the students showed their lack of understanding when they criticized Galileo for not identifying black holes in distant galaxies.”
Ouroboros
An ouroboros is a mythical or mystical symbol of a serpent or snake consuming its own tail. In literature, it has been used to describe cycles that renew or destroy themselves, or to blur the line between the two. It can represent eternity, the cyclical nature of things, or unity.
“The committee’s process became an obvious ouroboros with each new proposal consuming the one that came before it.”
“His ambition curled like an ouroboros as he fed on the victories that had once made him humble.”
“In 2008, the market panic became an ouroboros as social media rumors and reactions continued to feed on themselves.”
Combining the Two Words
When we looked at these words and their definitions separately, we had difficulty making any associations. But once we worked through the individual sentences, the possibilities for combining them in sentences became apparent.
“The use of presentism by each team turned the debate into a sort of ouroboros with each side using circular logic until the original question had been lost.”
“Presentism can become an intellectual ouroboros using modern outrage to avoid the harder work of understanding history.”
“The museum was caught between presentism and nostalgia, moving in an ouroboros that delivered nothing but repetition.”
