Two Words: Quiescence & Solipsistic

Quiescence is associated with a sense of stillness, quiet, or inactivity.  In some instances, we think of it as a synonym for suspension of activity or dormancy.  According to Webster’s Dictionary, quiescence is an old word dating to 1631.

In other forms, we have the verb quiesce, which means to become quiet or still.  Then there is quiescency, a noun meaning the state of quiescence (although it is rarely used).

“The boy’s summer camp was a beehive of activity during the summer months but transitioned into a profound quiescence during winter.”

“Meditating each morning, she reached a state of calmness, a quiescency.”

“The stress of their job made them want to quiesce at the end of each day.”

Solipsistic is an adjective used to describe someone who is egocentric.  In our world of social media, we are creating millions of solipsistic people.  These solipsistic people often focus and talk about only themselves, their friends, and perceived important contacts.

We also have the adverb form of the word, solipsistically, which is a bit difficult to use in conversation.  But never fear; there is always a way to use it.

“George was solipsistic and intentionally or unintentionally always focused on himself and important people he met.”

“Sally solipsistically dropped the names of all the movie stars she met in Hollywood, although few of her friends believed her.”

“Bruce became so solipsistic that no one wanted to spend time with him outside of work.”

Of course, we can combine them in a sentence, but not easily.

“Amid the tranquil quiescence of the forest, the solipsistic young lady pondered her existence, convinced that only her thoughts alone mattered.”

“The Buddha sought and found quiescence along his travels and was remarkable for his lack of solipsism as he gained wisdom and insight.”
