If you know the word Sialoquent you might know it from very unpleasant experiences. This is a rare word and has not been used conversationally in several centuries. But sialoquent is a word that, once you know it, getting it out of your head takes some work.
Sialoquent is an insult that denotes a person who spits as they speak. Some older people have this annoying habit, but it is not confined to the elderly. People passionate about an issue can also become sialoquent when taking a stand for their beliefs.
“Sam was so mad at George that he became sialoquent in his rebuttal of the issues.”
“Sylvester the Cat and Daffy Duck were cartoon personalities sialoquent in their characteristic speaking style.”
“During his political speech, the Senator became so sialoquent that people in the first two rows were wiping their faces in disgust.”
Widdershins is a word associated with counterclockwise, although it also has some obscure uses. When first used in the 1500s, the word denoted something or someone going in the wrong or opposite direction. According to Webster’s Dictionary, the word originates in Germany and is a portmanteau of “widar” (back) and “sinnen” (to travel).
There are other uses of the word in the whacky world of witchcraft, which might mean a magical circle drawn in a counterclockwise direction. But I will leave this definition and meaning to others who believe in this nonsense.
If a flag stands widdershins to the ocean, it indicates that it is pointed out to sea and not inland as usual.
“The broken clock was turning widdershins, and we could never discern the correct time.”
“Below the equator, tornadoes turn in a widdershins direction.”
Using these two words in a single sentence was not as difficult as some other combinations we have paired.
“He passionately explained the ancient dance, his speech became increasingly sialoquent, especially when describing the widdershins ballet around the stage.”
“Despite her sialoquent tendencies when excited, the storyteller captivated her audience as she described the widdershins dance around the blazing fire.”
“Her sialoquent storytelling, combined with the widdershins movements of the dancers, created an unforgettable and unrewarding evening.”
