Two Words: Largiloquent & Lamprophony

Largiloquent is an antiquated word used to describe someone who boasts and speaks grandly about themselves.  It is an older form of the word grandiloquent, which we explored earlier this year.  While grandiloquent is rarely used, largiloquent is even rarer.

“The politician’s largiloquent speech impressed the voters but lacked real substance, and we doubted he harvested many votes.”

“Her largiloquent style made even simple stories sound like epic tales, captivating the entire audience.”

“Tired of her boss’s largiloquent lectures, the team was begging for clear instructions.”

Lamprophony is a rare word that refers to the clarity and resonance of the voice, essentially speaking in a bright, clear, and loud manner.  For some reason, the word brings to mind George C. Scott in his famous role as George Patton.  He was not always bright, but clear, concise, and loud for sure.

“The actor’s lamprophony carried across the theater without a microphone, reaching even people in the back rows of the balconies.”

“Her lamprophony made every word distinct, even in the crowded hall.”

“Teachers often rely on lamprophony to keep students’ attention in eloquence classes.”

Combining these two words in a sentence is certainly possible, as they both relate to speech.  But these words are used so infrequently today that these sentences would not roll off anyone’s tongue.  Nonetheless, here are three examples to ponder.

The minister’s largiloquent sermon was delivered with such eloquence that even those in the back pews could not escape his booming rhetoric.

The mayor’s largiloquent praise of the city’s virtues, combined with the lamprophony of her voice, made the speech feel more like a theatrical performance than a political speech.

Though the Senator’s largiloquent promises lacked substance, his commanding lamprophony convinced the crowd to cheer as if inspired by genuine conviction.
