Catching Wild Pigs

The Parable of Zohran Mamdani

Karl Marx once said, “Remove one freedom per generation and soon you will have no freedom, and no one will have noticed.”

I have had this story in my computer files for at least five years.  It appeared anonymously in the By George Journal and others, and I want to paraphrase those words.  I wanted to share it with you because the lesson is so damn important that I hope you will share it with others across this great land and, in particular, share it with as many people as you know in the city of New York, where I grew up.

“There was once a biology professor at a large college who had some foreign exchange students in his class. One day, while the class was in the lab, the professor noticed a young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if it hurt.

The professor asked the young man what the matter was.  The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back.  He had been shot while fighting Communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country’s government and install a new communist regime.  In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question.  He asked: “Do you know how to catch wild pigs?”

The professor laughed and thought it was a joke, asking for the punch line.  The young man said that it was no joke.  “The way you catch wild pigs is by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground.  The pigs will see it and begin to come every day to eat the free food.  If you have patience, they will soon come every day.  At that point, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.  When they get used to the one-sided fence, they begin to eat the corn again, and at that point, you put up another side of the fence.

The pigs get used to the two sides of the fence, and they ignore it, preferring to find the corn and eat the free food all there for the taking.  Exhibiting patience, you continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate on the last side. You leave that gate open.

The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again.  You then slam the gate shut on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly, the wild pigs have lost their freedom.  They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught.  Soon, they put aside their captivity and went back to eating the free corn.  They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.”

If you think about this story, it is precisely what is happening in America & Canada and in New York City, the city of my birth and where I grew up.  The government (in this case, Zohran Mamdani and the left-leaning liberals like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) keep pushing us toward “Democratic Socialism”, a fancy Ivy League Phrase for Communism/Socialism.  They keep spreading the “free corn” out in the form of programs with such enticing names like supplemental income, tax credits for unearned income, tax exemptions, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare entitlements, free medicine, drugs, shelter and access to our social security programs for illegal immigrants, open borders during a pandemic, etc., all while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.  Former (thank God) President Biden campaigned (from his basement, you may recall) as the soft-spoken, grandfatherly, gentle leader, unlike that curmudgeon Trump, who was going to fulfill our every need.  In case you haven’t noticed, none of Biden’s actions and executive orders have done anything positive to help Americans and America.  Indeed, they have weakened America economically, morally, and militarily.  President Trump has, thankfully, addressed most, if not all, these insidious actions to the benefit of the people.

One can make a compelling case that President Biden has actually pushed our nation closer to war every time he opened his mouth.  Indeed, his willingness to re-enter the Iran Deal was not just a slap in the face of Israel, but a door opener to fostering armed conflict.  Israel will not stand by and allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.  John Kerry (you remember him, don’t you?), the “Climate Czar,” had his fingers in the Iran discussions and was blinded by his desire to welcome the world’s largest sponsor of state terrorism and hatred for all things Western to the table.  And, of course, Kerry is delighted that the democrats have embraced climate change and escalated it to the top of their list of vitally important and necessary things to accomplish!  Of course, there is no science behind any of it, but that doesn’t matter.  The damage had already been done with Biden’s cancelling the Keystone XL Pipeline, banning fracking and oil and coal exploration on Federal Land, and wiping out America’s energy independence, which took decades to develop.  And who, in command of their faculties, believed Biden was ever tough on China’s expansion plans in the South China Sea?  Remember, there was a plethora of evidence to suggest he and his son Hunter have very close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and might very well have taken payments in exchange for access to the office he now holds.

One should never forget two truths:

  1. There is no such thing as a free lunch and,
  2. You can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

The sad thing about all of this is that there really is no mystery about Zohran Mamdani.  He is a full-fledged communist at heart without a scintilla of experience in managing anything.  He has never held a full-time job, never accomplished a single thing worthy of discussion, yet he has become, according to the polls, the front-runner seeking to become the Mayor of New York City.  And he has told us in clear terms what he intends to do:  He wants to defund the police; convert grocery stores to government owned outlets offering free groceries to citizens; provide free bus rides to citizens in all the five boroughs, raise taxes on the so-called wealthy, among many other asinine actions by Comrade Mamdani….you know, just like wild pigs chomping down on free corn, not realizing that all that free corn hastened their loss of freedom.  How this is all supposed to work in the best interest of the people escapes me, but if Mamdani is successful in his bid to become Mayor, New York City will be bankrupt within two years.  The Mayor of New York City is not one of those “I will learn the job as I go along” type of positions.  Mamdani is like a balloon full of hot air.  He will fail miserably, but the people of New York will be the ones to suffer immensely as they realize all of what he promises cannot be successfully delivered.

You see, stripped of all the fancy jargon and the talking heads we see on TV, the major problem we face today is this:  The democrats/liberals/socialists/communists all believe passionately that the future of America lies with Big Government.  In their minds, it is big government that must be the guiding light for our future.  Big governments, they contend, can plan our lives and those of our children better than we can ourselves.  Big government believes that a problem does not exist that throwing money at it cannot solve.  Hell, we’ve spent $5.0 trillion since the 1960s on Civil Rights, and we’ve still got “racial inequity” …. but no one is mentioning that in the media…any media.  For the Left, government agencies once created are the closest thing we have to eternal life here on earth!

On the other side of the aisle, Republicans believe that the Republic our Founders gave us, where the only sovereign power our representatives have is that which we, the people, have given to them, is still the most unique and admired form of government in human history.  It has served us well for 250 years and is the envy of the world!  That bears repeating…. the envy of the world.  We still revere the words of Abraham Lincoln…’ government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth”

People ask me from time to time, ‘What can we do?’ My response is always the same: fight back!  Write your representatives, congressmen and women, senators, and governors.  Organize and inundate them with your feelings.  Don’t sit back and allow yourselves to be overtaken by actions you know to be wrong.  You have the power to make this happen.  Use it.

Meanwhile, if you see that all this wonderful government “help” is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America & Canada, you might want to share this with your friends. If you believe the free ride is essential to your way of life, then you will probably not agree with this.

But God help us all when the gate slams shut!

Now, think about this:

“The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.”
