At about the same time period in the seventeenth century, God’s attention was focused both on the northwest corner of Europe where His children were suffering from persecution, and also God knew He needed to arrange for help for the new American continent, which was in need of guidance as his people were moving rapidly toward independence from the British Empire.
We need to be aware of the threats to our country. Unlike most other countries, America is a truly free country, which means that freedom of movement and limitations on speech are not regulated. In essence, we are our own police. But despite these threats, we also need to be aware of the enjoyment of living in America and the joy of telling others the same. This is important because other than traffic directions and security guards, the American is expected to discern his own way, both with personal safety and while understanding the appropriate regard for others you meet along the way.
There is an ancient tale which I am told is true, and it is worth keeping in mind. It happened during the time the Athenians (Greeks) ruled the world. In those days, no one had radar or jet planes, but they did have enemies that could infiltrate the population. In those days, word of mouth was the manner in which they communicated and the method the enemies used to spy on whomever they chose.
As this story goes, the Greek patriot, told everyone that the Macedonians were poised to attack, but no one believed him. They all said that Macedonia was a long way distant, there is nothing to worry about, but in reality, the enemy can sneak up if they choose to get as close as our elbows. Hitler and his cohorts were, in reality, as close to his countryman as need be because they were all Germans in the beginning.
Furthermore, in modern times on college campuses, usually misguided uninformed students can be attracted by those illiberal professors who sound like they know everything. Gullible uninformed students can be hoodwinked and that is even though the source is likely a self-assuming false patriot who likes to gain weak followers.
The story is about the Macedonians who were rumored to be on the doorstep of the Athenian (Greek) empire. But even though it was Demosthenes, the great Greek patriot, who was telling the so-called rumor, his warnings were not believed. And in the not too far distant future, Demosthenes’ prediction proved true. Greece fell to the Macedonians even though it would not be long before the Macedonians would fall to the Great Roman Empire.
So, the point is that rumors can become true. Many times, in the past, there are often forerunners who preceded the soldiers of both WWI and WWII. It is no secret today that Hitler used Germans as spies, and they were very effective in the run-up to WWII.
But my message today is to those college kids who do not carry weapons but who carry wild ideas that they copied from the illiberal professors who are enamored by how easy it is to fill the immature teenager’s minds with false communistic claptrap: listen and watch. If you think you hear something untoward, tell a peace officer.
